How to Bring Your “A” Game!

Most of us are trying to play the game of life, but we don’t know the rules.  And one of the rules is – you’re never gonna have a clear plan, and the plan you have won’t work – at least not in the way you thought it would, so the only way to get where you want to go is to do what you know now and trust that the next steps will be revealed when they need to be.  It’s called faith, and unfortunately for us “scaredy cats”, there’s no way around it.

Let me be clear, this does not mean that you don’t create a plan at all nor does it mean that you don’t seek input from qualified advisors or assess the risk.  To secure a loan for your small business or venture capital for your product, you need things like a well-thought out business plan.  What I mean is that you don’t need a full blown blueprint for the next 3 years before you step up to make your first call and do something – whether that something is registering for a course, scheduling an appointment with someone you know can help you, or asking your boss what it will take for you to get to the next level!  Because plans and revelation come in the midst of motion, your full plan is going to develop on the way to your goal – not while you’re sitting on your duff flip-flopping about spending the money to take the advanced course or debating about going for it in your home business.

So what does that mean for you?

1.       It means that you have to learn to pee or get off the pot, as they say.  Train yourself to make decisions quickly and trust that the decisions you’re making are the right ones.  Author Andy Andrews has great quote that says, “God did not put in me the ability to always make right decisions.  He did, however, give me the ability to make a decision, then make it right.”  Making decisions right means that you search within yourself, make the decision quickly, then have the agility to notice the outcomes of those decisions to determine what, if anything, needs to change moving forward.  “Right” isn’t always right the first time.  Right might just be right for right now.

2.       Have no attachment to your plan.  Most of us hate to think that the plan we have might not work because we crave the comfort of the “sure thing”, and understandably so because there’s often a lot at stake:  our money, our time as well as the impact our decisions have on the people we love. The trick here is to be rock-solid clear about what you want –the outcome that you desire –  whether it’s the kind of man or woman you want to marry, the business  you want develop, the way you want to use your talent or gift in the marketplace.  Be clear about that.  Then, be completely unattached with how it all comes to fruition.  That’s when the magic happens.
Many of us stop short of what we want because it didn’t show up according to our plan.  For women, you may want a guy who adores you, who wants to travel the world and who will be a great father, but you get hung up because it has to be that guy – the one who has made it crystal clear that he’s not into you.  So you view God’s delays as God’s denials and you miss out on the other guy who has everything you want, all the emotional warm and fuzzies that the first guy gave you and then some, but you weren’t open to receiving it because he didn’t show up how you planned.  I’m not talking about settling here. I’m talking about getting what you want when you’re unattached to the precise plan for how to get it.

So the question for you is:  have you decided to “pee or get off the pot”, metaphorically speaking, or are you still in limbo waiting on your plan?  Are you ready to learn how to make quicker decisions with the certainty that you can make the right ones?    When it comes to planning and taking action, it’s not either/or, it’s and/both.  Make your plan along the way and keep it moving!

Question for you – In what area of your life have you been trying to “figure it out”?  With your health? With your finances?  With growing your business?  With relationships?  With parenting your kids?  With freeing up the incessant worrying in your head?  With finding your life passion and purpose?  With taking the steps to really live out that purpose?  With getting over your fears?  With improving your self-esteem?  The list can go on and on.  And you may think that some of these areas have nothing to do with success, but that could not be further from the truth.

A client of mine, Stella, had been wanting to step into her passion and purpose for 15 years.  For 15 years, she wanted to be a jazz artist.  For 15 years, she had given way to fear, to excuses, to complacency.  And for 15 years she had been depriving the world of her gift, and operating at less than her best.  Why – because she figured she could figure it out herself…for 15 years.

It wasn’t until she stepped up and said to me, “Hey – I need help!  I need you to help me get me over this hurdle” that she was really able to make inroads.  And the reason I could help get her over the hurdle is because (1) I’ve been there myself and have successfully navigated through it and (2) I have mastered the skills and strategies for motivating people to act in the direction of their desire.  When you talk with her, she will tell you that there was one instance in our sessions that shifted her from being unmotivated to motivated.  It was the key piece of leverage she was missing.  She couldn’t see it, but I knew it.  Why?  Because it’s my area of expertise.  So now, she’s no longer figuring this area out.  Whenever she needs to tap into it, she can tap into that strategy, and she will connect with me periodically when she needs to get to the next level in her life.

What keeps most people from doing what Stella did is the money – plain and simple.  People often are reluctant to invest in themselves.  We will invest in junk, in food, in empty entertainment, but often won’t spend the money to invest in our personal growth, to learn the strategies to improve our business, to find our passion, to raise healthy kids or to improve our communication with our spouse.  These are “nice to have” things in our life, but not “need to have” – even though these things are the very foundations for our joy and happiness.

We are often afraid of wasting our money, of being “scammed”, or we think, “maybe it won’t work for me”, that we make the excuse that it’s too expensive or that we don’t have the money or we ask ourselves, “Is this woman for real?  Can she really help me the way she says she can?”

So, instead of making the investments to get where we want to go quicker, we go about life by trial and error, wasting years of valuable time and bumping our head against the wall unnecessarily, when the investment in a guide who has mastered that area would have saved us countless hours of pain, heartache and frustration.

Let’s be clear – the investment is not always money.  Sometimes it is as simple as listening to a free call like this one or getting together with another married couple to learn how they’ve been successfully married for 30 years and still chasing each other around the bedroom.  Don’t simply get attached to the money.

So what does that mean for you?  It means you get to decide how long it takes you to reach success.  You can invest in people who have the skills to get you there faster or you can get at it the LONG way.  The choice is yours.

When I look back over my life, I can honestly say I have spent countless amounts of money on my growth – from my education, to career growth when I was in Corporate America, to my businesses, to my personal growth.  And there were isolated times when I thought, “Who gave this guy a platform to speak?  He kinda sucks.” or “She really isn’t that qualified to teach this.  This is really poor quality.”  So, not everybody I learned from was the best in their field.  But not one of those investments was a waste because I learned something – either I learned a skill or strategy that saved years off the growth of my business, or I learned what never to do to a customer, or I diagnosed what role I played in the demise of a past relationship so that I don’t repeat it when I’m married.  And across the whole, the joy and freedom and enthusiasm I have by finding my passion, living in it, designing my life and contributing to the world through my gift – all things I learned through investing in myself – was worth double the amount I paid for it!  All that I invested to get the courage and understanding  to leave the corporate life I hated for 15 years to do what I love – which is talking with you – there’s no price tag for that.  And if I lost everything I have, I could rebuild because I invested in the skills to do so.

And had I gone the road of “figuring it out myself”, I would be doing just that to this day – figuring it out myself.  But I got over that excuse a long time ago and it has served me well.  I now have a “Who done it?” mentality – meaning, who has done what I want to do successfully, and how can I learn from them?

I will not be figuring out the marriage thing on my own.  I will not be figuring out how to raise awesome kids on my own.  I will be too busy enjoying the hubby and the kids because I’ve invested the time and energy and yes, oftentimes money, to learn the best strategies that lead to success in those areas.

So the question for you is – in what area in your life have you been trying to “figure it out yourself”.  Where do you need to go to get the skills to get what you want?  If you need to find your passion and purpose, find someone who can help you figure it out?  If you want to take your life or business to the next level, find someone who can help you figure it out.  If you don’t have a clue what’s wrong in your life or where to even start, step up and take advantage of the resources right in front of you!
